Le second cours international d’entomologie médicale a eu lieu à Ventiane, à l’Institut Pasteur du Laos, pendant deux semaines (du 10 au 22 juin 2019). Ce cours est financé par l’Association Pasteur International Network et se déroule en alternance avec le cours à l’Institut Pasteur à Paris : « Insectes Vecteurs et Transmission des Agents Pathogènes (IVTAP) », dont la prochaine édition aura lieu du 20 avril au 15 mai 2020.

France would be more suspicious of vaccines than more than 140 other countries, according to a global survey into how people around the world think and feel about science and major health challenges, published on June 19^th, 2019. However, vaccines have made a key, cost-effective contribution to the prolongation of life expectancy and quality. Nowadays, vaccinology and immunology are facing challenges at the level of society, scientific innovation, and technology.

Pourtant, les vaccins ont largement contribué à l’allongement de l’espérance de vie et à l’amélioration de sa qualité, et ce, à moindres coûts. La vaccinologie et l’immunologie sont aujourd’hui confrontées à des défis tant sur les plans sociétaux et technologiques qu’au niveau des innovations scientifiques.

The Foundation IPSEN, an organization committed to promoting scientific knowledge among the general public, has become a new Institut Pasteur sponsor. It will support the production of around 15 new MOOCs and the creation of an online diploma in public health.

Research efforts in recent years have highlighted that sex - being a woman or a man - can have a strong influence on how humans and animals respond to many types of infections. Researchers at the Institut Pasteur have identified a sex-based difference in the early immune response to infection in a model of urinary tract infection in female and male animals.

Ces dernières années, les efforts de recherche ont mis en évidence la forte influence que pouvait avoir le sexe – le fait d’être un homme / mâle ou une femme / femelle – sur la réponse des humains / animaux à de nombreux types d’infections. Des chercheurs de l’Institut Pasteur ont ainsi identifié une différence fondée sur le sexe dans la réponse immunitaire précoce à un modèle d’infection urinaire d’animaux mâles et femelles.

The National Library of France (BnF) has awarded the 2019 Pasteur Vallery-Radot Prize to Institut Pasteur scientists Guillaume Duménil and Rogerio Amino. The winners were invited by BnF President Laurence Engel to receive their awards on June 13, 2019, at a ceremony held in the BnF Richelieu Library and attended by Daniel Louvard, a member of the French Academy of Sciences, and Stewart Cole, President of the Institut Pasteur. Here is a brief presentation of the two 2019 winners.

An observational study conducted in a French hospital showed that human contact was responsible for 90 percent of the spread of one species of antibiotic-resistant bacteria to new patients, but less than 60 percent of the spread of a different species. These findings suggest hand hygiene is a key, but more methods are needed to fight multidrug-resistant infection. Audrey Duval of the Versailles Saint Quentin University and the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France, and colleagues present these results in PLOS Computational Biology.
