Leptospirosis is a re-emerging zoonosis that affects over one million people and is responsible for nearly 60,000 deaths each year worldwide. This disease transmitted to humans via freshwater contaminated with bacteria of the genus Leptospira has a record incidence in Oceania. A group of researchers from the Institut Pasteur International Network coordinated by the Institut Pasteur de Nouvelle Calédonie has just described 12 new species of the genus Leptospira.

La leptospirose est une zoonose ré-émergente qui touche plus d’un million de personnes et fait près de 60000 morts par an à travers le monde. Cette maladie transmise à l’homme via de l’eau douce contaminée par des bactéries du genre Leptospira a une incidence record en Océanie. Un groupe de chercheurs du Réseau international des instituts Pasteur coordonné par l’Institut Pasteur de Nouvelle-Calédonie vient de décrire 12 nouvelles espèces du genre Leptospira.

In December 2014, cases of HIV infection were detected in Roka, a village in Battambang province, northwestern Cambodia. Of more than 2,000 villagers tested for HIV, 242 people, aged from 2 to 89 years are diagnosed positive. Their common point: they were all treated by a "doctor" without a degree who reused the same syringes for several patients. Arrested in December 2014, he was sentenced at the end of 2015 to 25 years in prison.

En décembre 2014, des cas d’infection au VIH sont détectés à Roka, un village de la province de Battambang, au nord-ouest du Cambodge. Sur plus de 2.000 villageois testés pour le VIH, 242 personnes, âgées de 2 à 89 ans, sont diagnostiquées positives. Leur point commun : elles ont toutes été soignées par un « médecin » sans diplôme qui réutilisait les mêmes seringues pour plusieurs patients. Arrêté en décembre 2014, il a été condamné fin 2015 à 25 ans de prison.

Antibiotic resistance is considered by WHO to be "one of the most serious threats to global health, food security and development". In Cambodia, the misuse of antibiotics is a known phenomenon, but there is little data on microbial resistance in the absence of a surveillance system. A study by the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge assessed the frequency and characteristics of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing enterobacteria (ESBL¹) over a four-year period.

La résistance aux antibiotiques est considérée par l’OMS comme « l’une des plus graves menaces pesant sur la santé mondiale, la sécurité alimentaire et le développement ». Au Cambodge, le mauvais usage des antibiotiques est un phénomène connu mais on dispose de peu de données sur la résistance microbienne, en l’absence de système de surveillance.

Like every year since 2013, the Institut Pasteur organized on December 11th a ceremony in honor of the young graduates who defended their PhD thesis during the 2016-2017 academic year. The 2017 edition honored 34 young Pasteurian scientists, 5 of whom completed their thesis in an institution member of the Institut Pasteur International Network.
