New therapeutic strategies are now crucial for combating microbial infections given the recurring threat of antibiotic resistance. A new approach involves using molecules from natural pharmacopoeia, i.e. derived from medicinal plants used in traditional Chinese medicine for instance. The antimicrobial properties of these molecules have recently been studied by Institut Pasteur scientists.

Face à la menace récurrente de l’antibiorésistance, de nouvelles stratégies thérapeutiques sont aujourd’hui indispensables pour lutter contre les infections microbiennes. Une nouvelle approche consiste à utiliser des molécules issues de la pharmacopée naturelle, c’est-à-dire dérivées de plantes médicinales utilisées par exemple dans la médecine traditionnelle chinoise. Les propriétés antimicrobiennes de ces molécules ont été récemment étudiées par des chercheurs de l’Institut Pasteur.

Professor Stewart Cole, President of the Institut Pasteur, and Professor Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, 2008 Nobel laureate in Medicine and honorary president of the Institut Pasteur International Network, presented the 2018 Dedonder-Clayton Award to Dr. Didier K. Ekouevi at the 4th annual Institut Pasteur International Network Symposium.

The fourth annual Institut Pasteur International Network Symposium concluded with the presentation of the "Pasteur International Talent" awards by Professor Stewart Cole, President of the Institut Pasteur and Dr. Marc Jouan, Vice-President International Affairs and International Network.

For its third edition, the 2018 François Sommer "Humans and Nature" Prize has been awarded to the French Phage Network Réseau Bactériophage France, set up by Laurent Debarbieux (Institut Pasteur, Paris). This French scientific prize of international dimension is dedicated to multidisciplinary research works, with innovative and promising perspectives concerning relations between human and nature.

The Institut Pasteur, set up following the success of the human rabies vaccination with funds from a public appeal launched by the French Academy of Sciences, was officially opened 130 years ago, on November 14, 1888, at a ceremony attended by the French President Sadi Carnot and several other prestigious guests. We look back on a day that "would go down in the history of medicine".*

A l’occasion du 4^ème symposium scientifique du Réseau international des instituts Pasteur, le Pr Stewart Cole, Directeur général de l’Institut Pasteur, et le Pr Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, Prix Nobel 2008 de médecine et Présidente honoraire du Réseau international des instituts Pasteur ont remis le prix Dedonder-Clayton 2018 au Dr Didier K. Ekouevi.

Professor Yves Buisson, President of the Exotic Pathologies Society, presented the Robert Deschiens Prize to Dr. Moritoshi Iwagami at the 4th annual Institut Pasteur International Symposium. Iwagami was honored for his research on Plasmodium falciparum’s resistance to artemisinin in Laos.
