Le 8 juin, le directeur général de l’Organisation mondiale de la santé a déclaré que, bien que la situation épidémique de la maladie Covid-19 s’améliore en Europe, elle s’aggrave dans le monde, mettant en garde contre tout laisser-aller. Le laboratoire de Découverte de pathogènes de l’Institut Pasteur et le laboratoire de neuropathologie de l’hôpital de la Pitié-Salpêtrière ont initié une recherche de pathogènes dans des cas d’encéphalites mortelles d’origine inconnue. Chez deux patients immunodéprimés, le virus Umbre (genre orthobunyavirus) a été identifié. Ce virus infecte les neurones du cortex cérébral (il est dit neurotrope), la moelle épinière et le foie.

The Institut Pasteur's Pathogen Discovery Laboratory and the neuropathology laboratory at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital set out to identify pathogens in fatal cases of encephalitis of unknown etiology. In two immunosuppressed patients, the Umbre virus (genus Orthobunyavirus) was identified. This virus infects neurons in the cerebral cortex, the spinal cord and the liver. The discovery of a novel arbovirus responsible for encephalitis, and its existence in France, holds particular interest for public health.

An international study has demonstrated that the microbiota and the intestinal cell death triggered by chemotherapy stimulate the efficacy of the immune response in patients with colorectal cancer. The results of the study, conducted in France by scientists from Gustave Roussy, Inserm, Université Paris-Saclay, the Institut Pasteur, IHU Méditerranée Infection and INRAE, were published in the journal Nature Medicine. The scientists offer new insights that shed light on the mechanisms governing positive or negative responses to cancer treatments. 

Le microbiote et la mort cellulaire des cellules de l’intestin provoquée par la chimiothérapie stimulent l’efficacité de la réponse immunitaire des patients atteints d’un cancer du côlon. C’est ce que démontrent les résultats d’une étude internationale publiée dans la revue Nature Medicine et menée en France par des chercheurs de Gustave Roussy, l’Inserm, l’Université Paris-Saclay, l’Institut Pasteur, l’IHU Méditerranée Infections et l’INRAe.

Using state-of-the-art sequencing and bioinformatics techniques, scientists from the Institut Pasteur, working with fellow scientists from Israel and China, determined that patients with severe forms of COVID-19 presented an abnormal, ineffective lymphocyte response and a massive infiltration of inflammatory cells in the lungs.
