Bruno Hoen appointed as Medical Research Director for the Institut Pasteur

On a proposal from Professor Stewart Cole, President of the Institut Pasteur, Professor Bruno Hoen has been appointed as the Institut Pasteur's Medical Research Director. This decision was approved by the Board of Directors on October 18, 2019. Until December 31, 2019, Bruno Hoen was a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Lorraine and Head of the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Department at Nancy University Hospital. Bruno Hoen took office at the start of January 2020.

Professor Bruno Hoen has been appointed as Medical Research Director for the Institut Pasteur. Until December 31, 2019, Bruno Hoen was a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Lorraine and Head of the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Department at Nancy University Hospital.

His career has mainly focused on different fields of infectious disease research (infective endocarditis, bacterial meningitis, HIV infection), and in recent years he has developed clinical and epidemiological research in the field of emerging infectious diseases.

Bruno Hoen has authored more than 200 papers for leading international journals and is a member of several learned societies and expert groups in infectious pathology and microbiology (SPILF, ESCMID, ISCVID, HCSP).

As Medical Research Director, Bruno Hoen will be in charge of the different Institut Pasteur departments concerned with medical activities, clinical and translational research, and public health. His area of responsibility covers the Institut Pasteur Medical Center, the Center for Translational Science, the Laboratory for Urgent Response to Biological Threats (CIBU), and the 14 National Reference Centers operating under the responsibility of the Institut Pasteur. His role will involve liaising with university teaching hospitals, research organizations involved in clinical research, and also the Institut Pasteur International Network in this field.

Bruno Hoen has an MD, and is a specialist in infectious and tropical diseases and an expert in internal medicine, nephrology and intensive care. He has a post-graduate diploma (DEA) in clinical and epidemiological research in the evaluation of health initiatives from the School of Public Health at Henri Poincaré University in Nancy. Professor Hoen also has a PhD in Biology and Health from Henri Poincaré University in Nancy and holds accreditation to supervise research.

Until December 31, 2019, Bruno Hoen was a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Lorraine and Head of the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Department at Nancy University Hospital. Between 2013 and 2018, he worked as a Professor and Senior Consultant for the Faculty of Medicine of the French West Indies and French Guiana, and as Head of the Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases, Dermatology, Internal Medicine, and the Critical Care Unit at Guadeloupe University Hospital. From 1996 to 2013, he was a Professor and Senior Consultant for the Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty at the University of Franche-Comté and Head of the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Department at Besançon University Hospital.
