HTLV-1 was the first human retrovirus to be discovered – it was isolated in 1980 by Robert Gallo's team in the United States. In 5% of cases, infected individuals go on to develop leukemia or a myeloneuropathy. Ten to twenty million people are infected by the virus worldwide.
