Des chercheurs viennent de mettre en évidence l’existence d’une immunité mémoire de type inflammatoire que le fœtus développe pendant la grossesse. Ces résultats suggèrent qu’il serait possible de mettre en place une mémoire vaccinale anténatale propre au nourrisson, et d'augmenter ainsi son immunité au cours des premiers mois de vie.

Neisseria meningitidis, ou méningocoque, est une bactérie responsable de méningites et de septicémies¹, dont la forme la plus grave, purpura fulminans, est souvent fatale. Cette bactérie, qui réside naturellement dans le rhinopharynx de l’Homme, est pathogène lorsqu’elle atteint la circulation sanguine.

Des chercheurs de l’Institut Pasteur, du CEA et du CNRS viennent de montrer que l’environnement direct des cellules souches peut avoir une forte influence sur le destin cellulaire de leur descendance. Ainsi, en fonction des tensions exercées sur des cellules souches en division, ils ont observé que ces dernières produisaient préférentiellement deux nouvelles cellules souches, ou bien une cellule souche et une cellule spécialisée, voire deux cellules spécialisées.

Neisseria meningitidis, also called meningococcus, is a bacterium responsible for meningitis and septicemia. Its most serious form, purpura fulminans, is often fatal. This bacterium, which is naturally present in humans in the nasopharynx, is pathogenic if it reaches the blood stream. Scientists have deciphered the molecular events through which meningococci target blood vessels and colonize them. This work opens a path to new therapeutic perspectives for treating vascular problems caused by this type of invasive infection.

Southeast Asia (SEA) is affected by emerging infectious diseases, and emerging outbreaks challenge the medical and scientific communities. The emergence of new diseases or their resistance to anti-microbial drugs in SEA is a complex mechanism which requires more interest on the diseases, on the condition of their emergence and on the diffusion of the causative agents.

Two years ago, the global community convened in London to hold the most significant international meeting on NTDs in history. The event galvanized major commitments from a diverse set of partners to eliminate or control 10 NTDs by 2020 – these commitments are now known as the London Declaration.
