The fight against infectious bacteria requires the understanding at the molecular level of the defense strategies, often very elaborate, that they deploy to counteract and defuse the host's defenses. Since Metchnikoff's precursor work, special attention has been paid to the specific mechanisms by which bacteria can combat the acidity of phagosomes; vesicles inside which they are enclosed to be "digested" by the immune cells.

La lutte contre les bactéries infectieuses nécessite la compréhension au niveau moléculaire des stratégies de défense, souvent très élaborées, qu'elles déploient pour contrecarrer et désamorcer les défenses de l'hôte. Depuis les travaux précurseurs de Metchnikoff, une attention particulière a été portée aux mécanismes spécifiques permettant aux bactéries de lutter contre l'acidité des phagosomes ; des vésicules dans lesquelles elles se retrouvent enfermées pour être « digérées » par les cellules immunitaires.

Today, Pr Christian Bréchot welcomed on the Institut Pasteur’s  campus in Paris, Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Vice-Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation to sign a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement will allow the two institutions  to cooperate in the fields of academics, research, teaching and knowledge sharing. It set the basis for building joint research projects, establish scientist and faculty exchanges programs and develop students’ mobility between the two institutions.

The African Academy of Sciences and the NEPAD Agency’s Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa (AESA) announced funding for eight African innovators to tackle maternal, neonatal and child health on the Continent. Among them 2 teams from the Institut Pasteur in Dakar and one from the Institut Pasteur in Madagascar were selected from among about 400 applicants from 20 African countries (see below).

L'Académie africaine des sciences et l'Alliance pour l'accélération de l'excellence scientifique en Afrique (AESA) - Agence du NEPAD - ont annoncé un financement pour huit projets africains innovants en matière de la santé maternelle, néonatale et infantile pour le continent. Parmi eux, deux équipes de l'Institut Pasteur de Dakar et une de l'Institut Pasteur de Madagascar ont été choisies parmi environ 400 candidats de 20 pays africains (voir ci-dessous).

The annual Institut Pasteur International Network Directors’s Council closed on Friday 22^nd  September in Abidjan in the presence of Christian Vigouroux, Chairman of the Institut Pasteur’s Board of Directors. During the 3 days of the meeting, representatives of the 33 member institutes were able to take stock of the main axes of development such as the scientific strategy of the network, ethics, communication, partnerships or research applications.

The scientific day of the 49^th Institut Pasteur International Network Directors’ council closed with the presentation of the "Pasteur International Talent" awards by Prof. Christian Bréchot to Drs Anubis Vega Rua and Felipe Trajtenberg. The "Pasteur International Talent" awards, worth € 10,000 each, aims to recognize and support the career development of researchers with high potential within the lnternational Network.

La journée scientifique de la 49^ème Réunion des Directeurs du Réseau international des instituts Pasteur s’est clôturée par la remise des prix « Pasteur International Talent » par le Pr. Christian Bréchot aux Drs Anubis Vega Rua et Felipe Trajtenberg. D’un montant de 10 000 €, le prix« Pasteur International Talent » vise à reconnaître et soutenir stimuler le développement de carrière pour les chercheurs à fort potentiel au sein du Réseau international.
