Le Réseau International des Instituts Pasteur, avec l’appui de la Direction Internationale de l’Institut Pasteur (Paris) et associé à des bailleurs institutionnels, s’est mobilisé pour aider certains instituts membres implantés en Afrique et Asie à mener à bien leurs missions de santé publique dans le cadre de la gestion de la pandémie de Covid-19. L’objectif de cette aide était de leur apporter un soutien financier et logistique visant à renforcer leurs dispositifs de surveillance, de diagnostic et de réponse face au virus.

Cardiac asymmetry established during embryonic development is critical to heart function. 1% of all newborns are affected by a heart defect, which in France accounts for approximately 8,000 babies per year. It is therefore essential to understand the mechanisms of heart formation in order to determine the causes of these defects. Sigolène Meilhac's Heart Morphogenesis team at the Institut Pasteur and Imagine Institute are involved in work in this area. They have investigated the role of Nodal in cardiac asymmetry.

Before the vaccine era, diphtheria was the most deadly respiratory infection in young children. There are still outbreaks of diphtheria in some world regions and cases can occur among unvaccinated individuals, with severe consequences. Antibiotics are vital in treating diphtheria, and the emergence of antibiotic resistance is a major public health concern. A team of Institut Pasteur scientists has identified the origins of penicillin resistance in the bacterial agent responsible for diphtheria.

The maladiecoronavirus.fr web application is a self-triage tool for suspected COVID-19 cases. It was the first application to be approved by the French Ministry of Health in March 2020, and has since been used by almost 13 million people. A study has demonstrated that use of maladiecoronavirus.fr led to an eightfold reduction in the number of unnecessary calls to the French medical emergency number (15).

Le prix Georges, Jacques et Elias Canetti fête cette année ses quinze ans. A l’occasion de cette édition 2020, c’est Mélanie Hamon qui sera récompensée le 14 décembre lors d’une cérémonie organisée en distanciel. Cette chercheuse est  responsable à l’Institut Pasteur (Paris) de l’équipe « Chromatine et infection ». Elle travaille sur les modifications épigénétiques induites lors d’infections bactériennes.

L’application web maladiecoronavirus.fr est une aide à l’orientation de patients suspects de Covid-19. Elle a été la première application référencée par le ministère chargée de la santé en mars 2020 et a été utilisée depuis par près de 13 millions de personnes. Une étude montre que l’utilisation de maladiecoronavirus.fr a permis de diviser par huit les appels non pertinents au numéro d’urgence 15.

Autoinflammatory diseases, like autoimmune diseases, are disorders caused by immune system dysfunction. They develop into chronic inflammatory diseases. Institut Pasteur scientists have observed that a natural sugar in the yeast cell wall may reduce excessive inflammation in some of these conditions, and could therefore be used as a treatment.

The 52nd meeting of the Institut Pasteur International Network Council of Directors was held from November, 17 to 20. Because of the extraordinary events this year, the latest meeting took place entirely on a remote basis.

The physical absence of the participants did not hinder the presentations, discussions and good humor of the meeting, which was greatly facilitated by simultaneous interpretation into English and French. More than a hundred people logged into each session.
